With the hi-tech industry moving rapidly towards an increasingly connected world (Internet-of-Things, Industry 4.0), as Technical Communicators we have the opportunity to help users understand advanced products and systems by offering concise pieces of information close to their point-of-use. Help Topics are one way of getting a big step closer to this goal. The presenter works as a ‘lone writer’ for Spectracom, a mid-sized IT manufacturing company in Rochester, NY. He will explain how he converted the page-based content of Spectracom’s existing documentation using the software tool MadCap Flare and will discuss the question if this case study is suitable as a model for other companies in a similar situation. He will also raise the question if all the work was worth it, and how users have been adopting to the new documentation format.

Hendrik van Edig

Documentation Engineer, Spectracom
I am a technical translator (German/English) by training, however I have worked most of my career as an author of technical content for companies in Germany, England, Ireland and the U.S. | While I generally take a very pragmatic approach towards creating technical documentation, I also like to try out contemporary techniques and 'cool' tools. This sometimes means trouble, but it can be very rewarding!
